Volunteer Spotlight: Nichole Berklas

Nichole Berklas, a Connecticut-based affordable housing and real estate attorney and Partner and Pro Bono Chair at Bocarsly Emden Cowan Esmail & Arndt, LLP, a transactional law firm, began volunteering with Pro Bono Partnership in 2022. In just over 18 months, Nichole has assisted six nonprofits in Connecticut with 10 unique legal matters in a variety of subject matters ranging from real estate to corporate governance to contracts. Nichole’s broad legal knowledge, along with her willingness to dig into complex matters involving thorny legal questions, has made her one of our most valued volunteers.

One of the nonprofit clients Nichole assisted was Hartford-based Girls For Technology (GFT). GFT promotes workforce equity and economic empowerment by providing STEM programs for women and girls of color. Sabrina Tucker-Barrett, President & CEO of Girls For Technology, described Pro Bono Partnership’s support as “invaluable” noting “how easy [the Partnership] makes things for us.” Sabrina elaborated that Nichole was a “great resource” who provided continuous support throughout a complex legal matter. In part because of Nichole’s legal assistance, GFT has been able to expand programming to help even more women and girls of color in Connecticut.

Pro Bono Partnership and our nonprofit clients are incredibly grateful for Nichole’s dedication to pro bono work, and we look forward to collaborating on many more projects in the future.
